I am not a baker and neither was my (late) husband. But he was a Latin teacher and he wanted to encourage ‘his’ boys before they took their exams. So he baked brownies in a tray, cut them up and put a flag in the top that said “Fortune favours the Bold,‘ in Latin of course.

The brownies were delicious and easy to make. Click here for the brownie recipe from the Queen of cakes, Mary Berry. This is a link to her own site, which sadly does not include the brownies.

One legend says The Palmer House Hotel in Chicago, USA created the first brownie, for the World Fair in 1893. If you want to try making their brownie, click here for the original recipe.
