Another still room book was found by George Weddell, a Victorian businessman. He was intrigued and spent some considerable time investigating the history of the book.

George decided that it was probably when Mary Cholmeley married the Rev Henry Fairfax in 1626, that she brought the still room book with her. This book of apothecaries’ lore and housewifery was added to by generations of the Fairfax family over three centuries (from before Shakespeare’s time). It is now called the ‘Arcana Fairfaxiana Manuscripta’.

In 1890 George published a facsimile copy of the book, which you can now read online, on the Wellcome Institute website.
