The National Archive holds the copy of the Domesday Book, commissioned by William I in 1085. They have a huge amount of fascinating information on their website. Including the World of Domesday, which ‘looks at what life was like in later 11th century England. The wealth of information that Domesday provides helps create a picture of the rich landscape that William conquered’.
The picture is a detail from the border of the Bayeux Tapestry.
