Then there is the story of Thomas Edison (1847 to 1931). I expect this story is exaggerated but I would like to think it is true, and a wonderful example of a wise mother.

One day Thomas came home from school with a note. “Mother, my teacher gave me this note and told me only you are to read it. What does it say?” His mother Nancy read the note aloud, “Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and we don’t have good enough teachers for his needs.” Thomas was home-schooled from then on and grew up to become a famous and prolific inventor.

After Nancy died Thomas found the note she had read that day, hidden under all her papers. It actually said, “Your son is mentally deficient. We cannot let him attend our school anymore. He is expelled.”
