This is a public service announcement, in case you forgot that tonight the clocks go forward.

Spring forward (on the last weekend in March)
Fall back (on the last weekend in October)

Benjamin Franklin was one of the founding fathers of the USA. He was also the American envoy to France between 1776 and 1785. During that time he wrote in a letter with the satirical suggestion that Parisians economise on candles by rising earlier. To remind people to rise earlier he suggested ringing church bells and firing cannons at sunrise. Nobody took his suggestion seriously.

Daylight saving time, which optimised the daylight hours by moving the clocks forward in spring, and back in winter, was implemented in the UK during the first world war.
